The history of the Rousse region dates back to the Neolithic Age, but it has developed as a military center during Roman rule. Called "Sexaginta Prista" or "City of 60 ships" it was an important naval outpost on the Danube river.
In modern days, Ruse has become an economic and cultural center being the biggest Bulgarian city on the Danube with an unique mixture of traditional image combined with the influence of Budapest, Bratislava, Wien and other centers of Central and Western Europe. The people of Ruse witnessed the very first movie projection, the opening of the first Ruse-Varna railroad track, the opening of the first insurance company in Bulgaria, to name a few. The entire Rousse central area shares the genuine traditions of the Neoclassical architecture genre, having one of the most distinctive looks among other major Bulgarian cities.
The entire area in the Ruse municipality bears the charismatic image of the small towns in the Danube Valley. From the quiet fishing hamlets situated along the Danube, to the picturesque villages in the "Rusenski Lom" National Park, we have a breathtaking scenery of beautiful sunsets and houses on hills overlooking Middle ages castles, as if taken straight from a fairy tale.
Bucharest, being a capital city, also plays its part in the economical growth of Rousse, being situated at just 60 kilometers away from the Danube city. Over the years, Rousse has established itself as a region rich in wine sorts which production is being exported all over the globe.
